The Gaffarenas' appeal was today harshly rejected by the office of the Attorney General who in response to the appeal filed on 23 February 2016 said that "Mr and Mrs Gaffarena's appeal is only being done to needlessly lengthen proceedings,".
The main reason given for this response was that there is no indication whatsoever in the appeal as to how the officials named in the appeal broke the law regarding conflict of interest, apart from the fact that there was no quoted law upon which to base the appeal.
The office of the AG also spoke for the officials mentioned, saying that there is nothing to prove the claims that there is any personal conflict of interest and that they were simply doing their job to the best of their ability.
It was said in the response that the appeal put forward by lawyer Dr Keith Bonnici on behalf of the Gaffarenas is wrought with character assassination and should be "disregarded and censored." The AG also added that "this appeal is nothing apart from a move to try to stall and unjustly hinder these officials from fulfilling their duties."
In conclusion, the AG reiterated that the only thing that can potentially come out of the requested appeal is a warning to the Gaffarenas for even bringing it forward in the first place. The case is to proceed with no further interference.
