Gozitan John Vella today was found guilty by Magistrate Joe Mifsud of stealing a 'stone winch' on 12 November 2011, as well as damaging property in Victoria. Mr Vella was fined €1,000 and must pay €575 to Mgr Joseph Vella Gauci.
Mr Vella pleaded not guilty to the accusations brought forward against him of stealing a stone winch belonging to a Mr Carmel Attard. He was also accused of damaging the property of Mgr Vella Gauci when he demolished three courses from the roof parapet wall and subsequently trespassing. He was also accused of being a relapser.
In its sentence, the court noted that, with his actions, Mr Vella challenged the court's authority and believed he had the right to break the law; that he isn't capable of living in harmony with civilized society and that he doesn't care about authority in the least because he believes he will always find pity.
Mr Vella was put on probation for three years. Magistrate Mifsud concluded by pointing out that, although he has been given a chance to repent for his actions without imprisonment, the court has put a "guillotine" on his head in the case that he does not abide by the conditions it has given him.
