Valletta's upcoming 2018 stint as European Capital of Culture will be promoted in China, following a memorandum of understanding signed today between the Culture Minister and China's Vice-Minister of Culture. The MOU states that China will promote Malta in events related to the East Asia City of Culture, a title currently held by Ningbo, a city in China's southeastern province of Zhejiang. In return, Malta will encourage a Chinese presence in Valletta 2018 activities. The agreement was signed by Culture Minister Owen Bonnici and Chinese Vice-Minister of Culture Zhijin Yang. It was signed on the basis of an agreement promoting cultural exchanges between the two countries for the 2014-18 period. The agreement states that ""the European Capital of Culture for 2018 bestows a special status on Valletta as a cultural gateway through which cultural exchanges among peoples and cultures can be promoted".
