PN agrees on need for Air Malta strategic partner, but says shares should also be sold to the public

The PN is all for a strategic partnership for Air Malta but would prefer if this was done through a different approach and not necessarily thought the sale of a substantial part of its equity to Alitalia. Addressing a press conference following the publication by the government of a Memorandum of Understanding with Alitalia and Etihad, Shadow Minister Claudio Grech said today that while the opposition would be supporting the government to reach the most advantageous agreement with the Italian carrier it wants to put its record straight on certain principles. He said that since Air Malta had a much bigger value for the Maltese economy than that of any other company, it should not become a feeder airline to serve a bigger network Instead of selling such a big stake to Alitalia (49 per cent), the government should consider floating some of the airline's shareholding to the Maltese public while still selling another part to Alitalia as part of the strategic partnership, he said.
