The Armed Forces of Malta have commissioned a new data centre and upgraded their microwave link network in a €2 million investment mostly funded by the EU. The microwave link network now covers all the coastal areas and AFM locations with advance encrypted communication. The new state of the art data centre was also built in less than a year at AFM Barracks in Luqa to host current and future information systems to ensure continuity in AFM surveillance and border operations. Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela said the dream of having the latest digital communications technology systems had become a reality. He recalled that prior to this project, the AFM had an obsolete microwave link network that was installed 15 years ago. The new system is better tailored to counter cyber security threats. Those present for the inauguration included the parliamentary secretary responsible for EU funds, Ian Borg, and AFM commander Brigadier Jeffrey Curmi.
