Clint Scerri no longer works at the Parliamentary Secretariat for Planning (Michael Falzon's former ministry), a spokesman for the Office of the Prime Minister office told The Malta Independent.
The new Parliamentary Secretary, this newsroom was told, will choose her own staff, the spokesman explained.
Clint Scerri has been implicated in several media reports for his involvement in the Gaffarena scandal.
Mr Scerri allegedly had contact with Mr Gaffarena during the dealings. The Internal Audit and Investigations Department (IAID) report revealed that Mr Scerri was present in meetings between the Director for Estate Management and Mr Gaffarena. It has also been previously alleged that Clint Scerri had accompanied Gaffarena to the Government Property Division to finalise the expropriation deal.
The National Audit Office, in a damning report that resulted in the resignation of Parliamentary Secretary Michael Falzon, showed concern about the ethical conduct of officials involved in the expropriation of land in Old Mint Street and collusion noted between the Government Property Department and Marco Gaffarena.
This conclusion was based on the fact that although it was within the GPD's legal right to acquire the entire property, the Department opted to expropriate only two undivided shares from Gaffarena in a piecemeal manner. In fact, the GPD only negotiated with Gaffarena and never informed any of the other co-owners of such negotiations.
The Prime Minister, in his capacity as a member of Parliament, and not as head of government, filed a case against Gaffarena to recoup the land, however Clint Scerri was not on government's witness list.
