Is picture of 'shark' in Marsamxett a fake?

A picture of a 'shark' in Marsamxett has gone viral on Facebook, but many are asking whether it is genuine or a doctored copy of a Great White sighting elsewhere. The photo (above) was allegedly taken yesterday morning but the similarities with a picture below from a website on Great White sharks appear uncanny. Times of Malta attempted to contact the person who uploaded the top picture, but got no reply. Alex 'Sharkman' Buttigieg instantly dismissed the picture as a fake providing the link to a picture of a Great White shark website. Marine biologist Alan Deidun said he was aware of the similarities with the actual picture of the Great White Shark. Commenting on the assumption that the photo has not been manipulated in any way, Dr Deidun said that what might appear at face value as two sharks are actually one - dorsal fin and caudal fin - of the same fish. "The dimensions, mainly the length of individual, the fact that person who took photo states that he noticed no spouting - marine mammals breathe out when they surface, and this is known as spouting - and the shape of the dorsal fin suggest that this could very well be a shark species, rather than a marine mammal."
