Crowd begins to gather in front of Castille for May 1 celebrations; Joseph Muscat to speak at 4pm

People have already begun to gather for the 1st of May celebrations in front of Castille, Valletta, with Prime Minister Joseph Muscat addressing the crowd later on the occasion of Workers Day.

The square is already beginning to fill up. Airhorns can already be heard, and a few people had Labour Party flags wrapped round their backs.

Worker's Day is an annual holiday celebrated all over the world, recognising the economic and social achievements of workers. Popularly known as May Day or International Workers' Day, the 1st of May is also a public holiday in Malta and Gozo. Activities commemorating this event take place mostly in Valletta

Dr Muscat will be addressing the event during a turbulent period in Maltese politics, after his decision to retain Konrad Mizzi as a Minister under his office, and his refusal to remove Keith Schembri from the position of Chief of Staff, resulted in harsh criticism from the Opposition, sections of civil society, and from within the Labour Party itself. The Prime Minister has yet been unable to shake the Labour Party loose from this scandal.

Konrad Mizzi and Keith Schembri were, a few months ago, found to have acquired companies in the secretive jurisdiction of Panama.

Minister Mizzi was seen earlier, backstage.
