Franco Mercieca to chair parliamentary environmental committee instead of Marlene Farrugia

Government MP Franco Mercieca will be chairing the Parliamentary Environment and Development Planning committee, thus replacing independent MP Marlene Farrugia after she resigned from her post last November.

Farrugia had resigned from her post following a disagreement with the Government on the new Environmental Protection Act.

As expressed in her resignation letter, Dr Farrugia will still be a member of the committee.

Deputy Prime Minister Louis Grech presented the motion which proposed Franco Mercieca for the post during yesterday's Parliamentary session.

The motion also suggested Anthony Agius Decelis as chairman of the social affairs committee. This position was occupied by Deborah Schembri who is now Parliamentary Secretary for Planning.

Godfrey Farrugia was proposed to take up Decelis' post as Chairman of the family affairs committee.
