Richard Cachia Caruana was paid almost half a million in termination benefits and allowances

Malta's former Permanent Representative to the EU, Richard Cachia Caruana, was paid €481,473 in termination benefits and allowances after he was forced to resign in 2012.

Information tabled by Foreign Affairs Minister George Vella in reply to a PQ by MP Silvio Schembri shows that Mr Cachia Caruana was afforded €179,931 in terminal benefits, €36,453 in Notice Payment and €39,549 in vacation leave reimbursement, for a total of €255,933.

Furthermore he was given a monthly Transitional Allowance of €6,265 for a period of three years, which adds up to another €225,540

Dr Vella said Mr Cachia Caruana had been appointed without a public call after he was recommended by the Office of the Prime Minister to serve as advisor on the European Parliament.

He was forced to resign after the Labour Opposition had filed a vote of no confidence, which was supported by former PN MP Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando.
